FIONA JAMES' MA SHOW - A GIFT

Posted: 11th January 2012

Friday 28th January  - March 2011
Manchester Buddhist Centre

"Fiona says …
I see the mandala as a template or container which holds the visual expression of my ideas, values and my other themes of interest such as nature, drawings, and symbolism.
I am interested in the Tibetan Buddhist practice of creating sand mandalas as a spiritual practice and lesson in impermanence. Mandalas can also be used as a tool within a healing context, and the process of making a mandala is significant to me as a mindfulness practice"

Found this information when researching about sand mandalas; I was looking to see if there was somewhere where I could go and see one. From photographs I have seen the sand looks to be layered, causing a pattern of relief on the work too. I would have liked to have seen this show, particularly to see how the mandala inspired the end images (both aesthetically and in choice of medium, surface, framing etc.)
