"The government wants to train a million people to become "dementia friends", as part of plans to raise awareness of the condition.Prime Minister David Cameron has said dementia is a national crisis and awareness of it is "shockingly low".Dominic Hughes reports." - 8 November 2012

Filmed in Oldham, it was interesting to see images of other day centres and a Life Story book. The carer - John Starkey talked really eloquently about his mum needing just that little extra time to do things and patience from others.

I wasn't fully sure of what the implications were of the article though..

My understanding is that there is to be government funded training of 1 million 'Dementia Friends' (* by 2015) is going to raise awareness of the condition.

Jeremy Hughes from the Alzheimer's Society talked about how they are training volunteers (yes, volunteers) to run Dementia Awareness courses for those interested in finding out more.

Perhaps carers of those with dementia would be running the courses - (would be useful to be just a volunteer too to not affect their carers allowance, although they would have to find alternative arrangement for care when they are training..)

Regardless of the practicalities of running the courses, I would be interested to know more about who would go to these courses and what would they really learn?

"Introducing Dementia Friends

Dementia Friends aims to make everyday life better for people with dementia by changing the way the nation thinks, talks and acts. By 2015, we want there to be a million people with the know-how to help people with dementia feel understood and included in their community.

So register your interest today and be one of the first to hear about when and how you can take the first step to becoming a Dementia Friend. By volunteering at the start, you can help build a network of Dementia Friends in your local community."

The £2.4 million programme is funded by the Social Fund and the Department of Health.

The worry I have is those that have the most insight and knowledge to share with this scheme will already be too busy working, caring or both in this field to also volunteer their time to this scheme.

As part of the PM's wider Dementia Challenge, this scheme will tie in with the Forget-Me-Not symbol - which is already being used in hospitals and sounds as though it could be part of a national scheme for 'dementia-friendly' places.
