PLAYFUL SPACES - WHAT OTHERS HAVE DONE

Posted: 29th February 2012

I wasn't really doing this project for the MA, but the idea of an interactive gallery space grabbed my attention.

So, below are some images and articles that I have found along the way...

Although one of the comments points out in this post that this design appears to come for another store; the Mandarina Duck Flagship Store, Paris (http://www.drooglab.com/projects/spaces/mandarina-duck-flagship-store--paris/) I find this idea of moveable pieces to change a space quite interesting.

This wall of pins can be used as shelving, cubby holes or just be used to recreate peoples faces (which is all I seem to find on Google!)

In some ways a retail space is similar to an interactive gallery - there has to be enough impact for people to stay and explore, as well as feel inviting and tactile.

Gallery Ideas: This sort of idea could be used to alter an environement. The ends of the pins could be more interesting shapes too - either jigsaw pieces or mosaic pieces that fit together. Could they be fleixble too? You could create whole organic cave-like walls with pieces that can merge and fit together.

The space doesn't have to be about things reverting back to how they were. The space could be about a change, a transformation or process.

One artist that has recently done this approach is Yayoi Kusama. She has used coloured dots as a way of the audience interacting, controlling and being part of the piece in The Obliteration Room.

Gallery Ideas: Could a simple, cheap device such as a sticker be used to alter a space and for people to 'leave' their mark on the work?

The Whitworth Art Gallery did do a Big Draw with stickers - Youtube clip:

I like the underlying sense of community within this transformation. The piece of artwork has been created through a collective endeavour. If I was to do a piece like this, I would want this idea of people building something together to be integral to the end piece. Multiples of things are always visually interesting, which could add to the overall effect.
